Writer agent

Drafts that land.

The Writer agent works on the file you have open — the selection, the outline, the comment thread — and edits it in place, as tracked changes you accept or reject.

The agent rewrites the passages as tracked changes and leaves them pending, so nothing is final until you decide. Accept or reject a single change from the right-click menu, or accept everything remaining with one click on the sidebar banner. Replica of the app window, driven through the agent's real states, not a screen recording.

What it does in Writer.

24 tools, grouped by what they’re for. Every capability below is a real tool the agent calls — the names are the evidence, the text explains what they let you do.

Reading & structure5 tools

  • Read the whole document, one section, or your selection
  • Search by exact text, case-insensitive match or regex
  • Pull the heading outline and word counts before editing
All 5 tools

  • format_document
OfficeLabs Writer sidebar on a fictional company's warehouse-move document after the user asks "Write a status update, then format it." Write Document writes a title and two sections, Where we stand and Next steps; Format Document then restyles it with a sans-serif face and blue headings.
A status update written in one call, then restyled with one formatting call.

A table, a chart and an image added to a report, one call each.

Scripting1 tool

  • A last-resort fallback for rare operations
  • Runs Python UNO code against the open document
  • Used only when no other tool covers the job
All 1 tool
  • execute_script
OfficeLabs Writer sidebar on a Quarterly Operations Review after the user asks "Highlight every figure in yellow." A single Run Script step (highlight every figure) runs and the numbers in the text are marked.
An unusual request handled with one script: every figure highlighted.

Skills.

Alongside the tools above, Writer carries 19 skills — pre-built prompt blueprints for common Writer work. A keyword match against what you ask selects one automatically and folds it into the agent’s instructions before it starts; there is no picker to operate.

Document types10 skills

A starting structure for a specific kind of document — a report, a proposal, a resume, a legal document — instead of a blank page.

  • academic_paper
  • legal_document
  • letter
  • manual
  • memo
  • newsletter
  • proposal
  • report
  • resume
  • sop

Advanced features6 skills

The document mechanics most people reach for a template or a colleague to get right: mail merge, a table of contents, citations, accessible structure, forms, a document assembled from several sub-documents.

  • accessibility
  • citations
  • forms
  • mail_merge
  • master_document
  • table_of_contents

Editing workflows3 skills

Working an existing document rather than starting one: clearing out a comment thread, a general cleanup pass, an editing pattern for revising in place.

  • address_comments
  • document_cleanup
  • editing_workflow

How it actually works.

The document is addressed as structure, not raw text. It pulls the heading outline out of a long document before deciding where to work, and searches for an exact passage rather than guessing at the first thing that looks similar.

When it changes a sentence, it can record that change as a tracked edit rather than a silent overwrite, so what moved stays visible and reversible. It also works inside the comment thread itself — reading what is open, replying, and resolving a thread only once the edit it asked for is actually in the document.

Where the edges are.

  • It edits the document you have open — it is not a bulk pipeline over a folder.
  • Large restructures are best reviewed with track changes on.
